KAUNAS

Kaunas, located at the confluence of Nemunas and Neris rivers, with  thousands inhabitants is one of the most significant cities of Lithuania. It could be described as a city that never accepted its role as the second city in the country.It was the first capital. The number of citizens have reached 283 300 in 2018 and Kaunas is the largest city in all Kaunas region.Kaunas is not only a city of old traditions, but also a large center of business and industry. It can also lay claim to be a city of young people with over 12 500 students (the largest number in Lithuania) studying at one of the seven universities here.

 

 

Kaunas is located 100 km from the capital Vilnius and Kaunas has some historical significance, so there are many museums and historic places. There are always cultural events. Located almost in the centre of Lithuania, it is a strategic starting point for travelling.

FOOD

The Cepelinai is a Lithuanian national dish, it is a dumplings are grated and riced potato with herbs, reconstituted in the shape of shells around a farce with minced meat. Measure of cepelinai is up to 20 cm. This dish is a reference to the zeppelin.

 

Lithuanian cuisine is the best among Baltic countries. In Lithuania, there are two types of cuisine: the traditional, inexpensive and invigorating and then the modern, more creative cuisine. Traditional cuisine is inspired by Polish know-how. It is easy to eat for 5-8 €.

Lithuanians love potatoes, no meat is served without its quantity of potato. Pork chops, veal and rolls, beef tongue are the most popular dishes. The fish only appears on a few menus and still rather by the seaside.

TIPS

In Lithuania as in the other Baltic countries, Lithuanians like to join friends or family around a tasty blonde or brown beer. More and more small breweries are created by Lithuanians.
